In order to locate the fabric quantity, you have to first locate the how-to-make page of the garment you are making. Refer to this page –
Next, right under the title of the garment, you will see this.

I’ve broken down the above material list to show you how to identify quantities of fabrics to purchase for size 110.
So basically the measurements are given in a sequence, so just select the correct size and use the corresponding number for each material on the list. For a full list of sewing terms, refer to my Dictionary of Japanese Sewing Terms.

hello! tank you for this amazing and helpfull blog! i have a question i didn’t find the answer here so maybe you can help. I just bought the wonderfull book “Kimono Remake Pants & Skirt – Japanese Craft Book – Sewing Pattern for Women, Men, Kids – Junko Matsushita – Eco Upcycled Clothing – B1213” i don’t know if you know it but it’s very good and inspiring and they very nice patterns for men pants which is pretty rare. I have a problem though with the measurment..they give the lenght of the pieces but the width come always as a Z (or 1/2Z 3/4Z etc) but i can’t determine how much Z is because i don’t understand the words…I can’t type in japaneses so it’s very hard to explain but maybe you know the book and can try to explain to me or i can send you pics….thanks for helping me on this one

Great post! However I still have a question to ask. Hope you can answer me.
I still do not understand the multiple numbers that follows after the width of the fabric measurement. For example:
Surface fabric 100cm wide…90 / 100 / 110 / 120cm
Could you kindly clarify the meaning of those numbers [90 / 100 / 110 / 120cm]? What is the purpose of the numbers? Thank you.

The numbers refer to the respective quantities of fabric for the different sizes.
In this example pattern, there are 4 sizes provided – 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 sizes. (This refers to the height of the child in centimetres)
In the list of materials, there are 2 types of fabric used, and you will notice for each type of fabric there are 4 values listed too? It is listed in order of the size. So if you are making 120 size, you will take the last value for both the surface fabric and the other fabric. i.e. 120cm of brown corduroy and 40c of floral fabric. On the other hand if you are making for a 100cm child, you will take the second value of the list, which is 100cm of brown corduroy and 30cm of floral fabric.
