Japanese Fabrics – Pretty Fleece Prints

November 21, 2012

I’m on the roll with my holiday sewing. This week’s obsession – fleece. Specifically Polar fleece.

Polar fleece is actually synthetic. But it’s soft, comfortable, warm and best of all, it is cheap! According to wikipedia, the first creators of Polar fleece “intentionally declined to patent Polar fleece, thus allowing the material to be produced cheaply and widely by many vendors, leading to the material’s quick and wide acceptance.”

I have been buying my fleece online from fabric.com (not advertising! :P) because there are not much choices in the stores here. But I’ve been choosing solid colours since I am only making fleece lining jackets. There are options from fabric.com for fleece prints, but I can never find designs that I like, most are too colorful or gaudy. So out of curiosity I had to search and find out what is available in the Japanese market.

And that’s not all. There are all kinds of polka dots, florals, checks, heart shapes, characters… the list goes on. I wish I discovered them earlier. Well, maybe I’ll save the option for next year’s sewing!
Do you use fleece for sewing cold weather projects? I am trying to make a sewing video to go with my fleece jacket pattern that I will post here in a couple of weeks time. If you are looking for one then stay tuned!
